01, 2006 Reviews: Joseph Marioni at Peter Blum
A review of a Joseph Marioni show at Peter Blum Chelsea, New York. With five huge, dour paintings, each billed as Painting, 2006" and acrylic and linen on stretcher," Marioni somberly inaugurated this gallery. As he has for decades, Marioni applies three or four coats of color to a canvas with a roller that he wields without a shred of irony. The works are larger, and the paint looser, than before, and now the top layer is typically thinned to a glaze, a film through which the penultimate application is filtered.
