SHAWN WALLIS
Click on image for details. When considering Wallis’ new works within the context of “new paintings; old relationships,” we witness paintings which embody the spirit of a new age in art; one that embraces the tenets of painting and sculpture that inspired artists during the Modern period and now serve as the cornerstone of artists such as Shawn Wallis, and their philosophical and aesthetic visions. Following the path of The Radical Concrete Painters whose artistry portrays veils of light and color; Wallis’ paintings have evolved adding a new component, one which explores the notion of space as well as light and color. Wallis’ quadrilateral, built-out panel boxes, serve as five-sided surfaces for his atmospheric journeys into layers of color, light, and space. The artist works the surfaces pushing the limits of the paint by imposing textural components which compel us to look further into his paintings in order to see them more clearly and which, in turn, compel us to look further into our own vision and understanding as we embrace his artistry. A disciple of the Radical Concrete Painting movement in Europe, and just named Texas Artist of the Year 2006 by Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA), Houston-based artist Shawn Wallis follows in the traditions of Modern minimalism. His quadrilateral, built-out panel boxes, serve as five-sided surfaces for his atmospheric journeys into layers of color and space. He will be honored with gala on June 2, 2006 by TALA.
