January 11 - 30, 2008 at Wade Wilson Art

Internationally renouned, Houston-based artist Virgil Grotfeldt will display new works in an exhibition “Paintings”  opening Friday, January 11, 6 - 9 p.m. at Wade Wilson Art.  Grotfeldt’s works center around complex expressions of natural phenomena rendered through delicate, biomorphic abstractions in organic materials such as coal dust suspended in acrylic medium.  The solo exhibit remains on view through January 30. 

Grotfeldt has been featured in more than 150 solo and group exhibitions.  In 2003 he was honored as Artist of the Year by The Art League of Houston and the first major publication of his work, “Virgil Grotfeldt” was released in hardback.  Grotfeldt has been show nationally and internationally in locations including Mexico, Europe, China and Japan.  His work resides in permanent collections of many prestigious museums including The Menil Collection, Houston, Whitney Museum of Art, New York, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Chengdu Museum, China and Fritz Becht Collection, Amsterdam.  Grotfeldt is an Associate Professor in Art at Houston Baptist University and has served as a guest critic at the Glassell School of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

Founded in March 2006, Wade Wilson Art brings a fresh voice to the Houston visual arts community by presenting artists who primarily have not been seen in Houston, but whose work reflects current movements in international art circles. The gallery, owned by Gregg Tyson and siblings Wade Wilson and Caroline Wilson Tyson, showcases painters, photographers and sculptors whose work explores use of light and color including Joseph Marioni, Jill Moser, Mark Williams, John Zurier and Anne Appleby.
