Artist Jill Moser Curates Exhibition at New York Gallery

"Index" on view at FREDERIEKE TAYLOR GALLERY through March 29

Anything which focuses the attention is an index.
Anything which startles us is an index.
Charles Sanders Peirce

"Index," an exhibition curated by painter Jill Moser, features artists Featuring works by Nancy Bowen, Mario Petrirena, Karen Shaw, David Webster, and Mark Williams. For these artists, the relationship between image and index plays a distinctive role in how they construct their work and derive their vocabulary.

Nancy Bowen borrows from Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic symbols and patterns to create new signs of meaning in her reinventions of bodies.  Mario Petrirena's reconfigures images of war, the body and apertures in collages that refer back to themselves.
In the 70's Karen Shaw invented an index of her own, "Summantics", in which she aligned numbers to the alphabet. This has served as the organizing principle of her work ever since.
Scientific realism is an indexical sign in The Supplicants, David Webster's photographs of x-rays of hands in positions of prayer.
For Mark Williams, it is the dimensions of masking tape & the record of its presence that are evident in the geometry of his paintings.

The exhibition is on view at FREDERIEKE TAYLOR GALLERY (535 West 22nd Street, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10011) through March 29.
